When is it time to talk about assisted living or memory care?

May 21, 2018 By towneclubdev

As our spouses, friends and loved ones grow older, it’s important to be aware of changes that might mean it’s time to discuss assisted living or memory care.  At Towne Club Windermere, we understand it can be confusing and difficult to discern between a normal sign of aging and one that might suggest more supportive care is needed.

We also know that sometimes a loved one might simply fear the idea of moving into a retirement community. That is why so many senior living communities such as Towne Club Windermere have elevated assisted living to a new level of sophistication and convenience.  In Club Level Assisted Living at Towne Club Windermere, our residents enjoy beautiful apartment homes and have access to an exceptional array of amenities and activities, delicious dining, countless opportunities for enjoying nature and much more. All with the reassurance of assistance with daily activities when needed.

Club Level Memory Care is an option for those seniors who exhibit more serious signs that could signal dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. It can be frustrating for you, and frightening for your loved one, when forgetfulness begins to interfere with quality of life and safety. At Towne Club Windermere, our Heartfelt CONNECTIONS—A Memory Care Program® offers people with Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementias the care, respect, dignity, and quality of life they deserve.

If you have concerns about a loved one living alone, here are 10 things that might signal it’s time to talk.

  1. Driving.  Recent fender benders or dents might signal it’s time for you to ride with your loved one and assess driving skills.
  2. Appearance.   This could be poor grooming, unwashed clothes, messy hair.
  3. Activities.  Loss of interest in favorite hobbies, giving up things could be a red flag.
  4. Moods.  If your loved one seems more irritable, depressed or is showing signs of chronic fatigue, this could be a red flag.
  5. Mobility.  See if your loved one can walk up and down stairs, has good balance, or can rise easily from a chair.
  6. Medications. Check for expired medicine bottles, unfilled prescriptions, or confusion about medication times.
  7. Maintenance.  If the yard seems neglected or the house is in disarray, this could mean living at home alone is no longer an option.
  8. Food.  Is there spoiled food in the refrigerator?  Or no food in the cupboards?
  9. Finances.  Look for unopened mail and past due bills to see if financial problems might be occurring.
  10. Forgetfulness.  If your loved one is wandering, or repeats things constantly or is missing appointments, it could be time to talk.

At Towne Club Windermere, we are here to help. Please call (770) 467-3459 with any questions about assisted living and memory care.
